HIDE AND TALLOW SALES
The fortnightly sales of hides and tallow. wero held yesterday by the various brokers.
Messrs. Dalgety and Co. Teporl that they submitted a good catalogue to 'a larce attendance of buyers. Tanners again ■ availed themselves of their right to'select 60 per ccnt. of all grades of ox and cow hides, and they took the whole of tho sound calfskins at scheduled rates. At the sale there was keen competition for the remainder of the offerings, and pri;es ,'were generally fully Id. per'lb. above the rates ruling at last sale. Exceptional prices were paid for any good cut and slippy calfskins offered, and for these' we obtained as high aa 37d. Tallow prices were firm, but unchanged, and the whole of the catalogue was satisfactorily disposed of. i The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile 'Agency Co., Ltd., report that unusually high prices were obtained • for all lots, as much as lljd. per lb. in some instances above schedule prices beiuu paid ■under tho In-.mmer. lallow and fat was In. good demand, but bidding was somewhat erratic.
The YVairarapa Farmers' Co-operative 'Association, Ltd., in which is incorporated .tho United Farmers'' Co-operative 'Association, report that ox and cow hides were firm. Calfskins were strongly competed for, Bliglitly cut reaching 37d, per lb. Tallow was on a par with last sale. The New Zealand Farmers' Co-opera-tive . Distributing Co., Ltd., report that previous sales' rates were generally exceeded by several pence per lb, the difl'crenco between the Government schedule rateß to tanncrß for sound calf, the top price tor "which was M., and tho price paid by exporters for cut and slippy lines being very marked, as much as 37d. being paid for the latter. Tho tallow market was attain very" Hrm, with an occasional increase in the value of tho better class of tallow in tins. - Messrs. Murray, Boberts, and Co., Ltd., report that their catalogue consisted of 1000 .hides 300 calfskins. The SO per cent. . submitted to auction brought cx'■tretto prices, under very keen competition. Tanners cxercised their right o7 selection on- all good lines and sound calf, leaving all the damaged calf to be submitted to auction. These showed an advance of from Id. to 6d. per lb., while hides advanced about Id. per lb. on last sale's rateß. Messrs. Levin and Co. report that they submitted a good selection of hides and calfskins to a. full bench cf tanners ar.d exporters. Competition was exceedingly keen, and exporters operated very freely for all liiden and calfskins not selected by tanners, consequently tho whole of tho. offerings were emitted at very satisfactory prices. As compared with the rates ruling at the sale held a fortnight ago, yesterday's priccs showed a substantial advance all round. Under keen competition from manufacturers and shippers values of tallow in tho. majority o'i instances, according to quality, showed a slight advance upon pricc3 current' at the last auction sales.
