THE EMBARGO ON HIDES

A. : Elliott, in reference to .the l>idc3 embargo, said it was a most iniquitous ar- >.'■ rangemeht. He hart been a .nemb-jr. of f : the deputation that had waited on the Prime Aliiutter in regard to the matter, 'lnoy hirt- I'octt promised that tliuv would ■receive redress. .It was a' matter of particular importance to fanners, and to give a, concrete example bo stated ;, ; that at tho last sale held at Palmerston " 'North 50 per cent, of the green hides ; which tanners had a right to went at ; 13d. per lb., whilo the whole of the -remainder brought 32d„ per lb. This Sieaht' a loss of JC2 to the. farmer on . ; 'every boast; - It was a most unfair and . jnpquitablo';'position that tanners had ...the right to select their hides at' the ' "schedulo price. Mr. Massey had informed the deputation that he recognised the weakness in the arrangement, it was solely on account of his absence from the Dominion that the scheme had .never come to pass.
Mr. Elliott tliGn moved the following resolution, which was carried unanimously •-"That this association supports tho attitude "of tlio Farmers' Union and other bodies with respect to the removal "ofrfto ..'anomaly existing in connection .with the '.embargo of hides."
