NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By Glencoe.). TRACK WORK' AT TRENTHAM. ' Yesterday morning was fine and bright, but there was n, touch of frost in tho nir at Trentham. There was a fair crowd to eee the work on thn training tracks.

H. Telford and J. Lowe were tho early birds. . find most of their horses had worked bv 5 a.m.

■ 80-Peep, who is well fancied for. the open sprint event on Saturday, was too good for Active over six furlongs.

Royal Exchange by herself did strong work on tho tan.

Printemps and another from A. Goodman's stables rah five furlongs, the last half-mile taking s'Jsee.

There was a lot of .interest in the two-year-olds' gallops, which, were run over tho Straight four furlongs on the outside of i'ne course proper, and from a barrier start.

In tho first heat-Halifax proved the superior, and there was a lot of merit in his effort, as he was behind the others with two furlongs to go. Tho runner-up one of H. Telford's team.

• The other heat went to the Bezonian horse Weary. Willie, who beat five others, including Fortune Teller. This halfmile was run under 50sec., and' the winner went particularly well.

: G. Prico'gav'e Hurry Up and a companion strong work on tho course proper. . •

Rose Pink did three-quarter pace work on tho tan.

Mascot was much too good forMotuihi on tho tan over a mile course.

Bonnv Maid beat Astinome over seven fuiloii's,. the /last six taking lmin. lfi lessee. ' . Hymnrty by herself ran half a mile in Blsec.. and wai not doing her best.

Demos, who looks well, was given a strong canter over a couple of ..rounds on the tan;

The courso is on the hard side, and if it keeps flne fast times will be recorded on Saturday.

So far no ricer.has been engaged for limine, who is one of tho favourites for the ; open sprint event on Saturday.

H: Cutta, with Acquittal and Moorfowl, is exported at Trentham to-day, and F. D. Jones, with Burrangong, will arrive'on Prittay. •

11. Hobbs is unable to jjet up to tho meeting as ho intends racing the G'up favourite. Gay Lad, at the Eangiora meeting on Monday. Ho will, however, bo represented at the local meeting by Mr. E. ,S. ■ Luttrell's 'pair Tortrix and i'licht- Commander, bo,fh of whom were eeen in a favourable light at Asliburton.

I\ Mason will arrivo from Iliccsu'ton to-inorrow 'with the: maidens I'alstaff and Lovelock. . ■ . ■

L. "Wilson, with Hetaua, Maioha, and Tropical, arrived' at headquarters last evening. E.- Eoed has been engaged to Tide the trio in their engagenm.n.-i. .

The Kilbroney—Portland Lass colt in M. Hobbs's stable is one of the finestlooking colts in training at Eiccarton.

Lucknow's success in the"- Caulfiold Cud marks yet another triumph U> the many achieved during recent years by 3inglish-bred horses in leading Australian evenis. Saturday's race was the fourth occasion in the last five years on which an imported horse has proved superior to the locally-bred candidates, Lucknow's predecessors .being . Lavendo, Shepherd King, and King Offa. Comedy King is the only imported animal who has won the Melbourne Cup.

'Sav» Monday's Christchurch "Sun":— After' breakfast it. Hobbs•/worked Gaj Lad - twice, round .on the tan in -sweat? ers. The inmorted horse is a great dnp.r. nnrl Hobbs savs ho will get fat in* one- afternoon. He was in-.a lather oh returning to the. scraping sheds,-but is very fresh and full of life.

The racehorses Spanner, Taunaha,'and Golden Bubble, members of 0. Jones's team, who competed unsuccessfully; in Australia rocontly, arrived'back in Auckland on Saturday by tire Moeraki;. and (ire at' pr'csuit lotateCi at "W. Mobberley's .stables, Ellcrslie, awaiting dispatch to' Hawkc's Bay. By the same •' boat, Messrs. Gleeson and Thorpe's two-year-old. Duncdin, who claims engagement in the A. E. C. Welcome Stakes next month, also arrived. Horsemen who returned to the.Dominion by thiyMoeriiki were, B. Deeley, R. Tapp, and/J; Deerey.'

Tho railways are running special trains for the Wellington Eaces on Saturday and Monday. A. detailed list of the arrangements! will bo foiii'd elwwhere. • ■ '

A few" weeks ago (writes "Poseidon" in .the Sydney "Sun") the New Zealand contingent of racehorses wore right in the public eye, and it was predicted on all sides that tliejy would scoop the. pool at the A.J.C. Spring Meeting, but it was not until 12 races had been, decided that the men from tho Dominion had a winning turn, when Karo came to the'rescue in the Sauattors' Handicap. . But she was not at all heavily backed, and returned the New Zealand punters very, little cf what they dropped over previous events. Among tiie visiting Now Zealanders axo Eomo heavy punter's, and one of them in particular must have had a very heavy settling, as he backed both Golden Bubble and Eossini'early in the Derby betting, and did not get a run with either. He has consistently supported the New Zealanders for big stakes since they came over, but was a. very small winner on Karo. The marinor in whicli tho New Zealand horses are shod .makes their track work very unreliable, as there is no means of comparison with the.local horses, who in tho majority of cases carry more iron than the Maorilanders. For instance, Spannor created a great sensation when he put up startling times on tho track just after nil arrival, but it is quite evident now that thero are plonty of horses 011 this side that can go just as fast, and some a bit faster, than Spanner, who is quite out of tho boom. .Even allowing for the fact that there was Borne justification for supporting Spannor for the Kensington Handicap,' it seemed bad judgment to support him so heavily for the Shorts as lio was meeting a much' better lot, and it was palpable that the natty son' of Tho Nut was very sore when doing his preliminary. Gentlemen visitors to tho Trentham •Eaees are specially invited to call and inspect the smart showing of men's wear displayed at Herb Prico's, Willis Street. —Advt. Trentham visitors don't fail to see the exclusive showine of men's wear at Herb Price's Store, Willis Street.—Advt. Trainers and Jockeys are invited to call and see Ilorb Prico's Great Display of 6iiramer wear. Wo are agents for Burberry's Coals and Stetson Hats—Advt. 1
