ALLEGED ATTEMPT TO PROCURE MURDER. 87 Telegraph—Special Corrmpondenl. Palmerston North, October 20. All extraordinary charge of attempting to procure murder was heard at the Magistrate's Court, at Palmerston North 10-ilny, before Mr. Stout, S.M. Charles Cockery, a middle-aged man, described as a stableman, was arraigned on the charge that, on October 13, 110 attempted to procure Henry Joseph Lewis and Alfred Mervyn Can'n to murder Detective Thomas Quirlce. The police asked for n remand until October 28. Mr. Ongley, who appeared for tho accused, applied for bail, to which the police objected, as other charges were pending. Mr. Ongley claimed that there was absolutely no evidence at the present time to warrant Ihe refusal of bail. His Worship said it seemed to him .1 most serinuu sort, of case, and refused to grant bail.
