LAND VALUATIONS

HOW TO ENSURE A FAIR VALUE. gj r _At the present time our members of Parliament seem worried about not getting sufficient land for our returned soldiers.

I think that if our present system of valuation for rating purposes was altered the Government would ncqnire nil the land they required at a reasonable price. A i. present the Government send a valuer round about overy three year?, nnd if he values too high tho owner can compel the Government to either Teduco the value or purchase. Now, Sir, what I would suggest is that every owner of land be his own valuer for rating purposes, and tho Government 01" onj 1 ibttanod cjoldktr h'lvo tiff ilgfct ta

purchase same at owner's valuation. So if a person valued his place too high he would have to pay rates and '/axes on same. And if he valued it too low tho Government could step jn and tako it at his valuation. I feel sure that if tho. ahovo were adoptod the returned soldier would get all the land he required at a reasonable price, and the county councils would linve more money to maintain our roads with; also tho Government would get increased revenue from the land tax.—l am, etc., L. J. HOWELL. Paraparanmu.
