At a committee mooting of the local brunch of the Returned Soldiers' Association. after some discussion, it was decided to represent to headquarters that the expense of continuing the employment of a district organiser was nut iustiiied under tho circumstances, and recommending that the position be abolished. A letter was read from Captain Kievwriglit, forwarding a resolution which had been carried by the Wellington branch in respect lo tho statements made by Mr. J. T. M. Hornsby, in regard to returned soldiers, when addressing a meeting at Carterton. It was decided to endorse tho action of the Wellington body. The meeting expressed approval oi' a .remit forwarded bv the Wairoa branch, to the effect that local associations should bo empowered to join railway leagues and other bodies for the purpose of developing their districts. and the delegates were instructed to support the same at 'the conference. The Piilmerston North Borough Council forwarded a .resolution which had beencarried at its last meeting, in which it recommended the Government when making grants to returned soldiers to enable them to purchase homes, that such Krauts should only be available for the purohaso or erection of new houses, and not for the acquisition of any previously erected. After discussion, in which the action of tho council was strongly condemned. it was resolved to express regret that, the council had seen lit to place such a lesolution on its books. A woll : attended meeting was held in Palmerston North on Tuesday evening •for tlio purpose of reviving the branch of the Sports Protection League, which -has hibernated for the past few years, 'l'he, chair was occupied by Mr. Harold Cooper, and amongst tho speakers were Mr. R. W. Shallcross, general secretary of the league. It having been decided to resuscitate the league, _ the following officers wore elected:—Patron, Mr. J. A. Nash. M.P.; pi;osidont, Mr. J. H. P. Strang; vice-presidents, Messrs. H. R. Cooper, A. H. Palairet, J. Mauning, E. Trevor. A. M. Ongley, l'\ Fairbrother, D. Munro. F. O'Connor, L. H. Jackson, H. L. Touiik, G. Watchorn, B. J. Jacobs, A. W. Thompson, and Dr. Paget; committer. Messis L. VV. Fit/.herbert, A. N. Barraud. C. Louisson, 11. L. Collinson. and S. C. Gascoigne; secretary and treasurer. Mr. W. li. Hankins. The question of the affiliation with the league of various sports bodies was discussed. and it was finally resolved:— "That this meeting recommends local controlling sports bodies to afiiliato with tho league, and that in addition individual members each should be enrolled." Tlm Paliuerston North Luncheon Club, established by tho Y.M.C.A., is proving a irreat success, and it is evident that th« new buffet will not long suffice to hold all the members who wish to be present. The luncheons are held weekly, and three-minute talks on various subjects are given by various members. Captain Kurby, who has been attnehed to the headquarters staff of the Wellington military district at Palmenston North since his return from active service. has been promoted major.
