NOTES FROM VARIOUS CENTRES (From Our Sp'ccial Correspondents.) WAIRARAPA At the monthly meeting of tho Central Committee of the AVairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, held this week, it was shown that tho genoiw; account was in debit to the extent of ,£l6(i ss. Gd., and tho loan account in credit to tho amount of A':!3B9 ss, The mini of ■£25,731 7s. 5(1. had 'been received from all sources during the six months ended September 30. Tho matrons' reports for the month of Septembor wero ns follow: —Masterton, admissions 35, d'schargcd 43, remaining 43; Greytown, K, 10,15; I'nhiatua, 13, J'2, 11. In order that tho matrons and pefihanent sisters might bo relieved for their holidays, it was decided to appoint a relieving sister for the district under tho board's jurisdiction. On Tuesday .afternoon, about fifty foldiers from tho Featherston 'Military II;:--pital were entertained at afternoon ua at tho lioturued Soldiers' Clubhouse, ijastertoii. Tho success of tho gathering, which 'included music and dancing, was mainly due to tho efforts of the Cadiea in charge—Mesdames J). Caselbnrg, W. Howard Booth, Cowles, and lioddington, and Miss Euby Oliver. Musical items wero contributed by the following:—Mesdames Lewis nnd A. Danniell and tho Misses IC. Ilolloway, J. Miller, and H. Kumnier. With'a view to alleviating the housing problem in Masterton, the Mayor, Mr. W. 11. Jackson, has written to Messrs. Staples and Co., Wellington, asking that tho tenancy of tho old dentinal Hotel bo handed ovpr to the Borough Council, who would renovate tho building and let it to tenants. After the council had recouped itself for the actual outlay the l'f'sidno of tho rents received would be devoted to the improvement of the building generally. An ncting-clerk is to_ be appointed to tho South Wairarapa River Board, pending the return of Mr. A. C. Holms from two months' leavo of absence. Tho annual general mooting of tho Mastorton Horticultural and Industrial Society v.'as held Wednesday, Sir. J. Caselberg Tho balance-sheet, which showed a credit of .£o9' ss. 4d.. and tho annual report wero adopted. The chairman. in his opening remarks, stated that the present attendance—over twenty—was tho largest since the resuscitation of the society nine years previously. The last shows had been hold in 1917, when the profits had been given to tho Y.M.C.A. patriotic funds. Officers were elected for the ensuing year as follow:—President, Mr. J. Caselberg; vice-presidents, Messrs. J. Allan and E. G. Dixon; committee, Messrs. W. JCemp, W. T. Wilton, E. Hale, •J. Henderson, Harding, Briden, Dunn, nnd H. M. Boddington; ladies' committee, Mesdames Graham, Miller, Price, T. Gordon, jun., It. G. Johnston, Briden, Harding, and Miss E. Ilobieson; honorary auditor, Mr. A. D. Low; secretary. Mr. F. J. Steel. It was decided to hold tho next rose and sweet pea show on November 20.

The influx to Masterton yesterday of several thousand people was a very severe tax upon tho hotel accommodation. Visitors began bo arrive on Wednesday afternoon, and their numbers steadily increased- right up to the start of tho raco meeting. The weather was perfect. Though the streets were almost impassable owing, to the traffic, the police reported that the crowd was finite orderly, and the only motor accident happened on the Opaki Road, where one of the cars p'y.'ng for hiro went over the bank in tui endeavour to avoid a horse that had shied. No one was hurt, though tho car wheels were wrenched loose. Tho Wairarapa Egg Circle is at present receiving 2s. per doxen for eggs sold in Wellington. The Wairarapa Cricket Association has decided to do away with the condition that all matches with outside teams be played in Masterton. This will enable return matches to bo played on the home grounds of the teams concerned.
