GROCERS' ASSISTANTS' UNION
The secretary of tho Wellington Grocers' Assistants' Union (Mr. 1!. M'Kcen) yestc-rday informed a Dojiinioh representative that his union was steadily endeavouring to bring about 5.30 p.m. closing in tho trade. "In the whole of Aus 1 - tralasin," uaid Mr. M'Keen, "the New Zealand grocore' assistants aTe the only shop assistants who work 52 hours per week. Most Wellington shop .assistants work 48 hours, and some only 46 hours." Following instructions from his union, Mr. M'Kcen has dTawn up a requisition lo be signed by all employers who favour the proposal to closc at 5.30. He believes that the requisition has every chance of success, silica many employers are holding back only in the absence of. some assurance that there will bo uniformity in the. trade. Ono master grocer ,Ims taken the bull by the horns and has already advertised his intention to put early closing into operation from October 20.
