SUBSCRIPTIONS TOTAL £8,000,000 COMPULSORY CLAUSES WILL OPERATE Sir James Allen made a statement to Uiii House of Representatives last nisht regarding the War Loan. He said Hint the subscriptions received by the Treasury had amounted to .1:8.000,000 of Ilia .£10,000,0(10 required. Certain subscriptions had still to be received. "It will be necessary to apply tho coiui«i'=ory clauses of the Finance Act," said the Minister, "and that will be done, People who have already subscribed a part of what they should subscribe will be called upon to subscribe the oilier part. All those who are able lo subscribe and should do so must do so. Provision has been made in lhe > Act for cases of genuine hardship, and it. in not intended that any real hardship shall )k> inflicted upon anyone. But at the same time it is intended lliat those who ran subscribe and have failed to do so shall be compelled."
