LAND FOR SOLDIERS
AREAS AVAILABLE IN WESTLAND. Br Telecraob—l'rut Atnoolntioa. . Hokitika, October 14. The "Westland 'Jowny Council, at its meeting to-day, discussed a letter from the Minister of Lands alleging that no land suitable for soldiers' settlements was available in Westliuid. It was resolved to point out that soldiers were acquiring land here at an oxocessivo prico to themselves and extra cost to the country, because the Government did not deal effectively with the position. Mention was made of a large area Of country, near Luko •Brunuer, suitable for settlement. It was now on the market, ami the Government was not making any move to acquire it. The land was net-. jacent to a railway, which would suon ho in closest touch with tho Canterbury market and enhance the value of (ho piopcrty. It was decided to draw Ino attention of the Government to tho mallei', and also ask that action be taken with reference lo the areas in the district said to be under consideration lor soldier settlement.
