WOMEN TO TEE RESCUE
Splendid work on behalf of the returned men Ims been done during the last three years by the Women's Mutual Aid Society in Auckland (states the "Herald"). Its most ambitious effort was' tho raising of JC2861 to secure the lease of the Soldiers' Hostel now established in Uppor Queen Street. Prior to this.no special provision was made anywhero in Auckland for the accommodation of tho returned soldiers, and tho hostel has proved a veritable boon. Ever since it was opened, over a year ago. its accommodation lias been fully taxed; there is room in the hostel for 10 men, and for 10 in a lui't'O marquee outside. _ Tho girls' branch renders voluntary aid in the housowork, and the hostel matron is a trained nurse. Nearly 300 meals were supplied to soldiers during the past three months, and 300 men have been given bed and breakfast. Tlio society lias in no way relaxed its effort since the end of the war, and towards the close nf tho year will hold a "Diggers' Market" in aid of the hostel fund. Another effort is to be made to procure the rolease of Alice Parkinson, and for this purpose a Parliamentary petition is being opened for signature- by the presidents and secretaries of all women's socioties.
