ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES

The case in which a young.man named Herbert Maloney was charged,on nino counts of attegeu iaise precences was concluded before Air. W, 6. Riddoll, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court on Saturday. -Maloney-is aUeg'od to have used the name of.George Nash, of AVadestown, ill order. to obtain from v«r.ous v city firms ten cases of whiaky. The .firms concerned were:' Messrs. Ellis and Manton, Pearsonand Co,, Levin and Co., Laery, Beveridge ami Co., and E. T. Taj'ior.. DetectiveSergeant Rawle prosecuted, and Mr. Broad defended. ' George Nash, dairyman, of Wa(lestown, •denied that he gave the ity to obtain whisky in his name. During last year witness gave Maloney an order for one caso of whisky. To Mr. Broad: Witness denied that he had purchased one case of whisky each' week during the past four months, and that the accused brought them to his place at Wadestown. He further denied that the accused had placed the whisky under some tanks at the house where witness resided.. Ho had only seen the accused once during the past four months. .Detective Black gavo evidence to tho effect that he arrested the accused on September on the charges of obtaining whisky by means of a fn'.se pretence. When the warrant was read, Maloney said': "I say no." Signatures on delivery dockets were shown to him, and lie denied knowing anything about any of them. In respect to the case of whisky procured from Ellis and Manton, Maloney said that he met Mr. Nash in tho Metropolitan Hotel, qnd, i,n accordance with Mr. Nash's instructions, he called for a caso of whisky. This concluded the case and Mr. Broai'd submitted that his client had no case to answer. His Worship, however, held that a prima facie case had been established, even though it might be considered chat some of the cases were not so strong as the others. The accused pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was allowed in the sum of ,£75, and one surety, of <£75. , OTHER CASES. William Murphy was- remanded till Tuesday on a charge of theft of Ski., the property of Anton Sigfrid Gustavsen. Bail was a'lilowed in the sum of <£50, and oiie surety of ,£SO. 1 > ' A remand for a week was granted m the ease of Edgar Ernest Baitl&iu, who was charged with the theft of a quantity of carpenter's tools, valued at 10s., tho t property of David Bruce. , _ . For a breach of his prohibition order, John William Campbell - was fined £2, and for insobriety ; was fined <£1. For insobriety, Jean Alaitland Harrop was fined il, and Henry Edwards was fined 10s. One'first offender was fined 10s. . . JUVENILE COURT. A'boy, aged 15 years, appeared before Mr. E. S:M., at the Juvenile Court to answer a icharge of attempting to steal 55.. worth of benzine, the property of Mr. E. S. Knight, of Roseneath. The boy pleaded guilty, and said that he luwl the use of a motor-cycle, but no benzine, and he had endeavoured to fitea'l some. The boy was admonished and the case was adjourned for twelve months, during which period the boy is to be ■under the supervision of the juvenile probation offiee.T. Another boy, aged 15 years, was admonished .-and discharged for smoking cigarettes. . . At a sitting of the Jit. Cook Police Court on Saturday, before Mr. W. Ellir son, J.P;, Thomas'Mylett was fined 20s. : in default seven days' imprisonment for insobriety. . ■
