NOTES FROM VARIOUS CENTRES ' (From Our Special Correspondents.) WAIRARAPA Some twenty settlers were present at a meeting held at Te AVhnrau on 'J'ues.lay afternoon, convened by the Wuirnrapa South County Council, for the purpose of discussing the bridging of tho rivers of .the district'. Councillor IX M'Gregor presided, and Mr. A, Johnson (county overseer) was also present. The chairman outlined the proposals, and pointed out that the meeting had first to decido whether the bridges were to be erected, and if so, the area for rating purposes. After some discussion it was decided to proceed with the erection of bridges over Jackson's Creek, Anderson's Creek, and the I'ahaoa Eiver. Sating' areas wero suggested in connection -with the various undertakings. A move is being made in Cartcrton towards securing rating on the unimproved value. Tho vital statistics for Carterton for September were: Births, 1; I deaths. I. Tho returns for the quarter were:-Births, 20; marriages, 11; t'eaths,B. Mr. F. J. Steel has been appointed secretary of the Mastcrton Progressive League. During the months.of July and/August the rates collected by the Masterton Borough Council amounted to iiiMa 13s. 3d. .The plans for the railway social hall, to be erected in Mastertoii;- have been prepared and approved. They provide for. a , hall measuring 40ft. by 20ft., with all conveniences. The building will bo erected by the .Department in the station yard, the furnishings being supplied by the staff, through whose efforts a sufficient.sum of money has already been obkined. to cover the expenses. Dr. Hathaway, who visited Masterton during the week in connection with the examinations of the Associated Board of the Royal. Academy and Koyal Collego of Music, has adjudged, the following candidates as successful:—Higher division: Mounica Bunny (Convent), Nancy Charles (Miss Livingstone). Elementary: Audrey Banks (Miss Jones), lluby Trounce (Miss Column), ltachel Tweedlc (Miss l/dy). l'l'imary •. Lilian- Dick (Miss Colman), Jack Bouzard (Miss Udy). Lower division: Gertrude Bouzard (Miss Udy), Kvelyiv Hill (Miss Udy). The Committee of Investigation in respect of the hydro-electric scheme has, in conjunction with Messrs. Templin and Toogood, engineers, denned the boundaries of an "inner area," comprising the'boroughs of Mastertoh, Carterton, Greytown and , Fe.ath'erston, the Martinborough Town Board and portions of the counties of Masterton, South AVairarapa and ■ Featherston. It is also desired to include- as an "outer area" the whole of the counties referred to above in addition to the Muiiriceville county. For 'the purpose, however, of. expediting a petition i'rciii ratepayers for establishment of a. Wnirarapa electric power district, it is proposed at present to deal only with the "inner area," if found permissible' in terms of regulations governing tlie Electric Power Boards Act, 1918. At a largely attended public gathering organised by the Presbyterian congregfc tion, Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Yule, ana Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Dagg, and their families, were entertained at a valedictory social. An excellent musical programme was contributed to by Mesdames J. H. Fieldhouse, A. Clark, A. C. Holms, C. J. Carlyon, J. A. Doctor and A. H. Bull, .Miss Warren, Dr. Crawford, Messrs. H. Graham and Suisted, and. Sergeiuit-Major Bell. Presentations were made to the departing guests by the Rev. K. 8.. Cathenvood, who paid a high tribute as to their qualities as church-workers and settlers, thanking' them for assistance in patriotic endeavours., The Mayo/ (Mr. J. W. Card) also'spoke. Bro. The lodgo cordially welcomed home Bros. W. i\ Kent-Johnston, , J. Stephen, and A. Hodder, activb service brethren, and with regret bade farewell to Bro.. J. C.
