RAILWAY GOODS
WORK OF TRANSIT COMMITTEE'. During the late restriction in the train services goods for conveyance by rail from Wellington havo been approved l>y the Wellington Railway Goods Transit Committee. At a meeting of the council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, which was held on Monday, a report was furnished on the working of Hie committee, which consisted of 40 members working in sub-committees of four—each sub-committee acting approximately ono morning or one afternoon a week. Tho committee acted during the period from August (j (o September 20, approximately six and one-half weeks. The total quantity of goods appioved for conveyance by rail whs 11,980 tons, of which 71122 tuns was goods deemed essential under the railway regulations,((and 4SGf.tons prohibited goods, which would not othenriso have been carried, had the' committee not been in existence. Resolutions were passed by the chamber expressing its appreciation of thf courtesy extended to members of the committee 'by tho railway officials acting with them, and also to members of the committee who devoted their time to enable the work to be carried on.
