SALMON AND OTHER FISH
ACCLIMATISATION EFFORTS. Some references, to the acclimatisation of <iuiniirtii salmon in the South Island rivers are contained in tim report of the Marine Department. There was a poor inn of salmon in the rivers last season, and thero was concern 'as to whether the fish would ever come bacJc again. Tho advice of experts in other fcounlrien, including I'roiessor J'irince, is that no concern need bo feld. because the full have failed to run for one year, Tho nninnat, they say, often drops a year or two year*. This habit of tho fish often causes a shorlage m the rivers ol North America. It is expected that the next large run of salmon in tho New Zealand rivers will be next season, or evon later, from the hatchings of tho largo spawnings of the years 1913 to 191". A recommendation is made in tho leport that another attempt be made to ncclimatiso Atlantic salmon, the landlocked salmon of Canada and tho United States', or of Norway, the deep-wafer trout of the North Italian lakes, and Iruiit. ot American mountain lakes and streams, tho British sea trout./imd American striped bass.
