NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By Glencoe.)

The Australian Jockey Club's Spring Meeting will b« advanced a further stage at. Hantlwick to-morrow. Tho Wlmngarei meeting will bo held on Thursday and Friday of this week. Jockcy B-. Reed, who was riding at Napier oil Saturday, went north yesterday to fulfil engagements at the meeting. Onn of his mounts will be Kilbeggan, who showed winning form -when ridden bv the same horseman at Arondale. Some of the officials of the llorowhenun Racing Club were expressing doubU yesterday as to whether the Manawatu River, which is in high flood, would subside sufficiently by Wednesday to allow the motor-cars to come from Foxton and tho adjoining districts. The club is absolutely dependent ujion the support of visitors for tho success of its meeting, and if tho roads are not passable the gathering, which promised most favourably, will suffer.

The spring' meeting of the Hawke'a Bay Jockey Club will be held on tho Hastings course to-morrow. Great interest will centre in the race for the Hastings Stakes, and it looks as if the Napier winner, Humbug, who is owned bv Mr. A. B. Williams, of Poverty Bay, may go out a good favourite. The fact thai; he has had a race and acquitted himself efl well cannot but tell in. his favour. but he will encounter a much stronger field at Hastings than he did at Napier. The Woodville trainer F. Dnvis has- taken over the full-sister to Desort Gold, and alsd a filly called Right and Left, by Merry Momenta, Desert Gold's sister 'is credited with being very smart, but she will naturally ba at a disadvantage in not having had n race. Another strong candidate from Woodville is Mr. R. M'Kenzie'n Kilbronoy—Lady Jean II colt, who is a good-looking youngster, and lias the reputation of being speedy. ■ His trainer travelled him a good deal during the winter, aud he wns seen with the colours up at both Trentham and Awapuni. The Porirua candidate Bestir is also to be onti of the field, and with the two races he had at Avondale lie should bo fit to run a merry half-mile.

The Malster mare Sweet Corn arrived at Hastings on Saturday night, after her unsuccessful trip to Avondale. She will probably be given a run in the sprint event at the Hastings meeting tomorrow. Events in town yesterday suggest that A. Attwood's charges War Star and Bonny Briar may both run well in their engagements at the Levin meeting, which is scheduled to take place to-morrow. Those who intend being present at the Levin meeting can travel north by the mail train, leaving Thorndon at 8.2<) a.m. The New Plymouth mail leaves Levin on the return journey at 4.10 p.m. The form of Ardna-ree in the Trial Stakes at Randwick will strengthen his position ns favourite for the Caulfield Cup. One thing that his admirers can be cortain of is that he will strip a fit horse, for h» has been racing for some time past, and in his last two starts ho has becn-succe-ssful. His trainer H. R. Telford, when resident in this country, always believed in doing plenty of work with his horses, especially when they were going to raco over n distance, but there is little fear of him overdoing this part, of the business, for the St. .Alwynne stock stand up well to their work, and seem to be of a very hardy constitution. Owners should bear in iniud that acceptances for the first day's races at MnsIcrton close on Friday next at !l n.m. Acceptances for thei li.'st day's handicaps at the Asliborl'-'i meeting. also entries for the Trial P'ale and Maiden Hack How at 5 n.in. 10-mTpv. On Frkia.v nf this week Mr. H. Coylc will declare his adjustments for the first day .handicaps at Wellington.
