PREVENTION OF SPREAD OF TICKS

.Infestation of stock by ticks of the genus Ixodidao has been declared n, disease for the purposes of the btock Act, 190S, and the following rtgulatioiis havo been gazetted' -' l.'For-thepurposes of these regulations •'cattle 'tick" means any parasite of the cunus Ixodidae, and does not include the parasite known as the sheep tick (.uelophagus ovinus). 'l'he removal of stock irom land on which cattle ticks aro known to exist is hereby prohibited, unless such removal takes place in accordance' with thu conditions hereinafter prescribed. Any person Sliding cattle, ticks pre-: Ejerit on stock in his possession or under his" charge, .shall, within, twenty-four j hours, notify the fact to the Inspector of Stock for the district in which the animals are located. ' 4-. All stock harbouring cattlo 'ticks shall be so treated as to ensure the complete destruction: of all cattle ticks upon them, such treatment to 'be either—(a) Dipping in an approved cattle-tick-destroying solution; o>- (b) some other effective method authorised by the inopector. After treatment as aforesaid such stock shall not bo removed to any other , place until they have been examined ' by an inspector and declared by him to-be free from living cattle ticks. 5. Notice of . intention to removo stock from any land on which cattle ticks are known to'exist must be given to the inspector at least seven clear days before removal. Stock so intended for removal must be dipped or otherwise effectively treated as authorised by the inspector within forty-eight hours before removal, and shall not afterwards be placed in any infected paddock or enclosure or allowed to come in contact with any diseased or infected stock. 6. If any stock affected with cattlo ticks are found in any pound'or in any yard or yards other than for immediate slaughter, or on any land or other place at which stock aro offered for sale or exhibition, the owner exposing such stock so affected shall bo liable to a fine not exceeding ,£2O for every head of the said stock: Provided that if the inspector is satisfied that such stock are intended for immediate slaughter ho may authorise their removal to a slaughtering-place or slaughtering-houso without dipping or other treatment to destroy cattle ticks, but such stock shall not be allowed to mix with any other stock not so affected, or placed in"any accommodation paddock or other place which might be used for non-infected stock not > intended for slaughter; and provided further, if the said stock are placed in any railway vehicle such vehicle shall, after the use thereof, be at once thoroughly cleansed to the satisfaction of the inspector in such a manner as to ensure the destruction of cattle ticks. 7. Tho inspector shall order the withdrawal from sale or exhibition of any stock affected with cattle ticks, except as provided in clause 6 hereof, and shall give notice to tho owner of such stock to dip or otherwise treat them in such a manner as to effectively destroy all cattle tiots upon them forthwith at such place and in such maunor as the inspector may direct. Such withdrawal shall not affect the liability of the owner in, respect of

any breach of the said Act or these regulations. 8. Every person who by himself, his agent or servant, drives, without permission of tho inspector, any stock nli'ectcd with cattlo ticks across or upon any land, or drives, depastures, or suffers to stray any such stock upon or along any highway, is liable to a line not exceeding .£SO and not less than £'1 for every day during which such stock are so dnven, depastured, or suH'crcd to stray. 9. Any conveyance which has been used or is suspected of having been, used for the carriage of stock affected with cattle ticks shall be thoroughly cleansed before being again used. 10. No cattle shnll be shipped from any port in the North Island unless they have been first examined by an inspector and declared to be free from infestation by cuttle ticks.
