SUGAR SHORTAGE
' BOARD OF TRADE TO INQUIRE. A question regarding 'the shortage of sugar reported in some parts of the Dominion was asked in,the House oi -luv pr'eselitatives by Mr. J. A. Young ("j u ". kato). The manager of the- Colonial. Sugar Company, stated Mr. Young, hart said recently that, he bad five - weeks supply of sugar in hand.- But a leading Hamilton merchant had forwarded correspondence showing: that the Sup* Company was refusing orders and that retailer.?' in the Waikato were being compelled to ration their customers. Mr. Young asked the Prime Minister to look into the matter and could bo done to Tolieve the Waikato towns The Prime Minister said ho v.culd ask the Hoard of Trade to make inquiries on the subject. Ho had not received any communication dealing with the lpatler, but he had noticed in the newspapers that a shipload of sugar had been sent away from Auckland owing to Ike refusal of the waterside workers to haudlfl the cargo, the crew 'being a non-union crew,. Some 4000 tons of sugar were thus lost to New Zealand.
