SHOCKING FATALITY

MOTOMCLIST KILLED

TWO OTHERS INJURED

A shocking motor-cycle fatality occurred at the cornoi' of Davis Street and Thorndon Quay at C o'clock, on Saturday evening, when Frederick William Jollands was killed instantly and William Gnnter.and George Sullivan seriously inlured and rendered unconscious.

On Saturday afternoon Giuitcr, tin.' owner of the machine, accompanied liy Jollands and Sullivan, went for a ride tu Petone. Jollands and Sullivan wore sit tins behind Gu'nter. On approach! ng-th;' Davis Street. corner from Thermion Quay Gnnter apparently lost control, and the machine struck the curb of the footpath. The three men were thrown heav • ilv to the ground, Jollands receiving n •fractured skull, and dying almost instantly. Sullivan ami Ohinter both sustained concussion, and Gnnter in addition had both jaws and his nose broken. Eve-witnesses of the accident state that the machine proceeded along Thorndon Quay at a high speed, and it was while Gnnter was endeavouring to negotiate the corner that ho lost control. Tho machine shot' over the footpath, and pierced an iron hoarding on th 6 cornei. Dr.<. Young and Litchfield were promptly summoned. They ordered Guhter and Sullivan to the hospital, whert- they were conveyed in the Harbour Board's ambulance. . :• Police officers travelling in the train from Petone. to Wellington noticed the cycle travelling at a high rate of speed, along the Hutt Road. They estimated the speed to bo from between forty to fiftv miles an hour. ' The deceased, who "esided in a boardinghonse in Sydney Street, was a married man living apart from his wife, who resides at Petone. He was born in England, and wns 49 years of age. He followed the occupation of labourer and steward. An inquest will be held. From an inquiry made last night it appears that the two men in hospital had regained consciousness, and were not in danger of their lives. v
