WAP SERVICE CHEVRONS. The following, published in the Gazette issued last evening, is of interest to the mercantile marine:— , ,

Tho Board of Trade have authorised chevrons to-be worn by masters, officers, and members of the crews of merchant vessels, the vessels of pilotage and lighthouse authorities, and by licensed pilots, and fishermen who have served at sea or have been captured or interned during the war in accordance with the following provisions:— 1. Ono chevron may be worn in respect of seagoing service, or captivity or internment in an enemy country, during the period from August 4, 1914, to December 31. 1914. . 2. One chevron may be worn m respect of each or any of the three calendar years 1915, 1910, and 1917, provided that at least three months of the year havo been spent alloat in seagoing service, or in captivity, in an enemy country, or both. 3. One chevron may be worn in respect nf the remainder of tho war, when twelve months have been spent since January 1. 1918, in seagoing service (with or without a period of captivity ,in an enemy country), provided that the period of twelve months has commenced before November 11 1918. when the armistice was signed. 4 For certificated masters and officers,skippers of fishing vessels, licensed pilots, uncertificated iunior officers qualifying for their first certificates, surgeons, pursers. wireless operators, cadets ana; apprentices in tho mercantile marine and masters, officers, and apprentices of vessels of pilotago and lighthouse authorities, the chevrons for 1914 shall be silver, the others gold. For all other officers, second hands, petty officers, and ranks and ratings in the mercantile marine, in the fishing service, and in vessels of pilotago and lighthouse authorities, the chevron for 1914 shall be of red worsted, the others of blue worsted. , .., , r.. Tim chevrons shall be similar to those worn in the Ifoyal Navy, and shall be worn on the forearm of the right sleeve of uniform, sea rig or shoro rig; Hie silver and red worsted chevrons, respectively shall be worn below the others. Chevrons earned for naval or military iv'vvicn in accordance with Admiralty or War Office regulations may bo worn m addition to the mercantile marine chevrons: and. even when earned in respect of military service, they must bo worn as prescribed in paragraph 4 of this authorisation. 0 No pei mission to wear the chevrons, other than this general authorisation, will bo lequired. Chevrons will not be provided by the Board of Trade, but thev should be purchased by those authorised to wear them. 7 Tinder the Defence of the Realm Emulations it is an offence for any unauthorised person to wear a chevron. _ Note-Chevrons earned for service in the mercantile marine in accordance with this authorisation may be worn on naval and military uniform; when worn on uiilitavv uniform tho cheviun should be of tho Army pattern.
