INTERESTING SCHOOL FINAL. At Kilbirnie Park yesterday afternoon two 6chool team.6, Marist (Thorndon) met Marist (Newtown) to decide which of the two should hold tho banner and tho shield, which is contested yearly by primary schools. 'At present Thorndon Marist have both the banner and shield in their possession. The sumo two clubs last season contested the final, which resulted in Thorndon loaving the field'vicI torious by two goals to nil. The scholars from both schools were the principal barrackers, while a few adults also enjoyed'tho game. Newtown won the toss and elected to play with the sun at their backs. From the kick-off Thorndon quickly invaded their opponents' area, nvhere Gleeson, Thorndon, tested Wylio, goal-keeper, who brought off a fine 6avo, Although playing with the sun in their eyes Thorndon made vigorous attacks, and were awarded several cornerß in succession, but those did not lead to any score. After some fast play Knight, wing for Thorndon, received and sent on to Khouri, ivho transferred to Gleeson, but t.he latter had no chance, as three opponents had-him well marked. Newtown retaliated, and, through the good services of Condon,' Keough. and Kershaw, had Thorndon defending their goal. A miskick by Eeid (back) gave Condon a good chance which' he threw away. Not to bo denied, Newtown came again, but Foley, who 'was playing a great. game at back for Thorndon, relieved his side' from a dangerous position. Eventually from a "throw-in" in Thorndon's twenty-five, Condon got the leather at toe and sent on to Kershaw, who found the net with a high shot, which gave Leonard no chanoe. Newtown 1, Thorndon 0. Thi6 livened things up, and Kb'ouri. insideleft for Thorndon, sent in a hot'shot which was saved, at the expense of a corner. The back lines of both' teams ■ were kept busy, Gamble and Keough' being prominent for Newtown, while Eeid and Foley were two lively backs for Thorndon. From this until half-time play was confined to midfield. The second spell was far more exciting than the first. Newtown made things willing for the first few minutes, but tho defonco of Hawkin, 'Eeid, Gardiner, Foley, and Parry was too strong. Fro'm a goal kick Gleeson received and sent on to Engel. but tho latter was not quick enough in receiving, thus giving Gamble (back) the chance to transfer play. to Thorndon territory. Gardiner received the leather, and passing it over to Knight gave the latter a good opportunity which lie missed. At this stage Gleeson got the ball at toe, and after a fine solo rush down tho field sent the leather, over the cross-bar. Both sides were making strenuous efforts to scoro, but without success. Gardiner, centrehalf for'Marist (Thorndon), was conspicuous on several occasions, and kept his forwards oil the move throughout. At length Khouri, who was playing a, splendid game at inside-left for Thorndon, in his opponents' twentyfive area, and tricking the halves and backs sent in a beautiful shot from a diffioult angle, which puzzled tho goalkeeper., Thorndon 1, Ne.ivtown 1. Both teams played strenuous football at this stage, and 'the respective goal-keepers were kept very busy. A fine combined rush by Newtown, in which Yates, Mar- . shent, and, Kershaw participated, nearly resulted in a score, Foley saving. At this stage Hawkin, wiio was playing a great game at right-half for Thorndon, participated in : a:passing rush,.■ and centred; tho ball in: front of tho'goal, but Gleeson .was stopped by the two backs, while tho "goalie" cleared. It was evident. that both Asides were enger to add the winning goal, but irhen tho' whistle sounded for time the score was unaltered, and the gamo resulted in a drawone" all. Leonard, who was for Thorndon, brought off some marvellous eaves. Hawkins was a fine little half, and Barry, at left-lialf, played splendid game,- while Gardiner (captain), at centre-half, was one of the mainstays of the team. The play: of Foley'and Eeid at back was of a .high standard, while .Gleeson and IChouri were tho pick of the forwards. In the Newtown team Marshent was prominent at' celitre-for-ward, wliilo'Condon and Yates were two good wings. . Keough and Sharj. ivoro safe halves, and..Gamble was the best of the backs, while Wylis.was sal'o in goal.- Mr. Ward controlled the game.
