MANGAHAO HYDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEME
PROGRESS OP THE WORK. (By Telesrraph—Special Correspondent.) Palmerston North, September 23. In connection with the Mangahao hydro-electric scheme, up to the present contracts have. been let for the formation of a road to the top of the ridge leading to the Mangnhao dam. The distance, approximates five miles. Of this, portion lias been completed and the rest is well. under. way. At present 43 men are employed, independent of tho engineering staff,. Contracts j'or tho remainder of the road to tho dam 'in the Mangahao Valley; are;;rsadjr to • b-;. let. A second permanent camp, is being- erected, and 80 moro men. are to start on the bal-ance-of the road work. The winter season in the mountains led to considerable loss of time,' and the cartiny has considerably damaged the road already existing between the Manawatu Plain and the Tokomaru Valley. This constitutes the whole of the work actually done on the undertaking. A considerable amount of preparation work has been done by the engineering staff. Contracts have been let for the supply of a steam-driven clectrical plant for working air compressor;! for driving tunnels, but'' the plant has to como from England it being impossible to procure it in tho Dominion Dr in Australia. Further steps are boiui; taken to immediately saw the timber required for the housing and frames on tho ground adjoining the Mangahao.dam, and this will soon ho on the way.
