D ■ THE OTAKI RACES . ROSE PINK WINS MEMORIAL STAKES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Otaki, September 20. Fine weather favoured the Otaki Meeting but tho attendance was not up to the'standard of previous meetings, and tho club sorely missed the tftin seivice. Tho sum of .£14,075 w-as put through the totalisator- during the day. Tho success of several favourites materially assisted to swell the totalisator turnover. Tho racing provided some very line finishes, particularly in the big handicap and the Stewards' Hack Handicap. Royal Exchange and Haeremoana were the only ones backed in the Maiden Plato and the former, who was a good lavourite, won handily, after beginning badly. Sweet Memory was the first out, and led into tho straight, wibli Sunburst, but the favourite then took charge and won easily. Ilaercnioaiia w as third, and then came Sunburst and Idlc"ife'peranee and Sunburst declined their engagements in the mile Jlack Race, and in wliali waS regarded as a weak field the public favoured Olynthus. The chestnut horse was unlucky to lose, as he finished well in second ■ place after being badly boxed at the homo turn. Pervolo and Railand made the pace for six furlongs, when Consultation and Mavmorn joined in, and Olynthus also took a hand in tho finish. Maymorn got a break at the distance and won hicely from Olynthus and Consultation, witli Utuwai close up., i The Steeplechase was the most successful event of- tho kind ever held on tho Otaki course. Want was a good favourite, and ho won after giving a splendid exhibition of fencing the whole way, but in this lie was not alone, and up till the six furlongs from homo all (lie competitors had jumped faultlessly. Then Goldstream and Slumix fell, and Luko fell at the next fence. At the finish Want won comfortably from Pawerewore, with Fir.st Line close up. All started in the big handicap, tho public preferring the chances of Pink, with the remainder evenly backed. Mascot led for a couple of'i'urlongs, when Spangle went out in front. At tho halt-mile. Plash Lady was second and Rose Pink third. Tho latter moved up as the straight was entered, but with a furlong to go Mascot and Pacific Slope put m claims, but. ridden out, tho favourite won by a neck, with Pacific Slope ft head away. Detroit was fourth, 1 All started in the Stewards' Hack, winch resulted in a very close finish between tho favourite Chaeronia and Printemps. At the start this pair led Red Signal, and Matty, and tho quartet was •' l . line entering the straight. Up the straight the. two lea-ders gained an advantage, and in a, ver y c ] ose fi n j g h Chaeronia on the insido got the verdict by a liose. Matty was a length away, an-cl Red Signal finished fourti). Arch Lassio got off badly, and at ono stago was giving the leaders a big break, butshe was in behind them at the turn, onb to fail in the run home. The raco wiil do her a lot of good. ~ The whole of the acceptors paraded for the Plying Handicap. Astinoino and iUatatua divided favouritism. The former was a trifle unluckv at the barrier ?i a ruu afterwards. Trentham Rose had a big break on Gold 1 l'obleni-and Matatua into the straight; hut the ■ latter finished strongly, and though Moutoa Ivanova.put in a strong challenge the leader held her off and won by half a length. Trentham Rose was tlnrd and. Birkenvale next. • Pervolo and Railand declined their engagements in the Hack Welter, for .wili-ich oacramento was made an odds-oil favounte. Restful and -Russet led the vrrn! 1 . 6 " ,e ' lon,a turn where Ml'hnn took him .to tho front, and though Dick threw out a chullonge the favourite held his own, and won by a length'. Manufinished well in third place} and then camo Russet. . After the success of Sacramento it was only to bo expected that Old Gold would have a big following in the Onen Welter. Aliika and Tyne were also well backed. Sweet I'ipperary was in charge into tho straight, where the favourite Prince Delaware and Aliika became prominent, Prince Delaware hung out badly, and Old Gold took charge. He had to bo ridden out to beat Ahika. who finished well. Prince Delaware was third and Sweet lipperary next. j .Details of the racing are as followi— " Rr- TelerrßDh-PrMR Asuonlstlon.
