NEWS OF CANDIDATES. Tlui Rev. J. K. Archer, formerly of Napier, who recently made' charges against the prison administration of the Dominion and particularly Napier gaol, is likelv to be a candidate for the Invarenrgill seat against Mr. J. A. Hunan, until recently Minister of Education and at one time Minister of.lustice and Min,liter in Charge of Prisons. Mr. J. I], iiickey, ot Kaponga, has announced his intention of contesting the lfcmont seat at .the general elections as a Liberal candidate. Mr. J. J ( , Cony, Major of Blenheim, has definitely decided to contest the Wairau'seat at the forthcoming election. If. is understood that Mr. D. Larnach has been requested to permit himself to lie nominated as the Liberal candidate for Dunedin North. Interviewed On his return from Australia regarding his political intentions, Mr. A. E. Jull, chairman of the Napier Harbour Board, stated that lie had just arrived back in the country and had nothing to say in the meantime. A MODERATE LABOUR SPEECH. Hy Wliangarei, September 20. Mr. A. H. Curtis, one of the four Marsden candidates, addressed the electors lust liiglit at Wliangarei, professing moderate Labour views. He expressed himself in favour of proportional representation, ail elective Legislative Council, women's political lights, civil rights for State employees, ' tile development of Crown lands before others purchased, the Slate to establish a bank and shippiiisj service, experimental tarms, and control of food profits, free education up to (lie university, free school books, increased taxation on land speculatively held ami on unearned increments, a compulsory superannuation fund for all adults to replnco cl.d age' pension's, the settlement of industrial tlisputes by arbitration. Regarding the liquor question, the candidate did not advocate prohibition,; 'but adequate State control. He said that inturned men acquiring Crown ateas should be charged only interest on the cost of improvements, and those desirous of start ing. business should'have sulficient money allowed therefor. Ho also favoured the speedy completion of railways, forming and metalling arterial loads, the reformation of the military system, the appointment of a Minister 'and Department ol Commerce, the subsidising of local bodies in the compu'sory erection of dwellings, mid the creating of Wliangarei as a port Of entry. A vote of thanks was accorded the speaker.
