CUSTOMS SMOKE CONCERT
The Cusloms and Marine Departments and Customhouse ngenta foregathered in tlio Navals' Hall, Jervoa Quay, on Saturday evening to revive their annual smoke concerts. At about this time of the year also tlie men who "pass entries" and those who collect, duties play nt liugby &iotball, and tlio annual match was played on Saturday nt Ivilbirnie Park, '.vlion the Customs beat the agents by lo points to fi, thus winning for the first time the beautiful cup presented by Jlr. li. Carstens, Customhouix; agent, during tho week. Tor years a miniature onp served tlie purposq, and it has for the older men in the service pleasaut memories. The smoke concert on Saturday was lbfirst since 1914, for the functions were suspended' during the ivar. Mr. A. Newton presided, and there was & very full attendance of members. llr. J. I'. Luke, Ml'., attended during tlio evening, and was heartly wolcomed. The toast list was a lengthy one. Mr. Franklyn proposed tho "Customs and Marine Departments." to which Messrs. . CI. Craig (Assistant Comptroller of Customs) and G. Allport (herniary of .Marine) responded. Mir. A. Paul (Inspector, Customs Department) toasted tho ."Customhouse Agents," and Messrs. A. Bannister mid 11. li. Mitchell responded. The other toasts honoured were tlie "Football Teams" and tlie "Navy and Army." During'tho evening tho chairman presented tho captain (Mr. K, Smyth) of the winning team with the cup, which will be held 'by the Department for tho year. Songs, elocutionary items, and i'.iinoious stories were contributed by the chairman, Messrs. Wilson, A. Puller Fogarly, Kendo, J. Nichol. (,'!upshaw, A. TvupsCH, and H. L. Mitchell. Mr. G, P. Pritchard was at the piano.
