ALLENBY AND THE ANZACS

AUSTRALIAN CORRESPONDENT RESENTS A SLIGHT GENERAL CRITICISED (By Teleerapb-Prcss Association-Copyright (Kec. September IS), 8.10 p.m.) Sydney, September 19. Mr. Harry Gullet, the official 'correspondent . with tlio. A.I.'P. ..in Palestine, writes to the Sydney "Sun" with '.reference, to. a recent statement by-, General Allenby tliat his army was a cosmopolitan one, mentioning various 'nationalities, including the New Zealanders, but failing to mention the Australians; and adding that towards the close of the campaign two-thirds of tlio airmy were Mohammedans. Jtr. Gullet says that the "Sun's" suggestion that tho omission of the Australians was !>n unintentional slip may be right, but lie doubts it. Such an omission would be enaracteristic of General Allenby's altitude towards the Light Horse. "Without, tho Australians and New Zealanders- Palestine would never have beeu won," says Mr. Gullet, "and nobody knows this better than General Allenby and General Murray, ■ but neither of them is big enough to for. give tho Australians and Nrj; Zealanders their relative slackness in ceremonial discipline, Although in almost every fight they gambled on tlio.Ar.zac fire discipline to carry them through, and it did." The correspondent gives instances in proof of General Allenby's failure, to recogniso Hi a work of tho Australians and. New Zealanders, and of liritish truckling to Hie Moslem, which ho declares was carried to stupid extremes, and claims that with the exception of the British, Australians, and New Zealanders, the other nationals mentioned by General Allenby took* a,u insignificant part in tho campaign. Mr. Gullet describes the Arab as ouo of tho most cowardly mid cruel. lighters who ever made a protence of going to war, and savs that the magnificent New Zealand Mounted ltiilo Brigade could clean up all Arabia provided the Arabs would como near enough to tight. Ho concludes: "Australians need no defence Time and impartial military students will probably estimate the part they and the New Zealanders played, in (he overthrow of 'Turkey, and the conquest of Palestine."—Press Assn.
