NAVY LEAGUE GATHERING

A MEMORABLE OCCASION,

A very interesting-and to the residents of -Petone a memorable-gathering took place at the Grand Theatre yesterday afternoon, when the Petone District High School, the' Petone .West School, and the Koro Kqro School, were presented with Blue Ensigns- on the occasion of each school obtaining one hundred or more new- members for the JSavy Lea'Mie The Petone schools had succeeded'in obtaining ovor 400 new members in less than one week. , . There was a good attendance ot children and the public at the theatre, and Mr D M'Kenzie, chairman of the ketone District High School Committee, presided. Among those present;on the platform were: Lieutenant-Oommander de Salis, of H.M.S. New Zealand U. T M. Wilford (member for Hutt) the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) and Mayor- • ess Lieutenant-Colonel Roberts (Hutt Valley representative- of the Navy League). Messrs. N. E. Haslam. D. S. Beclingneld, J. H. Lynskey, Head, and The°proceedings opened with tho singing of he National Anthem, after which the Mayor delivered a short address logieing the work) done by the Navy during the war. He also touched on social unrest, and at the conclusion of his address.recited the "Psalm of Life. The children'then sang "The• Bow m Navy Blue," and cheers for the Navy & M°r V Wilford said that such an occasion as hi ould be a "red-letter" day in tho history of Petone.
