WHY A DIFFERENCE IS MADE 1 . Tho following report on tho difference! in rates charged for direct and alternating elecJiric current was presented by Mr. W. Cable at.last evening's meotins of tho City Council;— "With reference to Councillor Forsyth's request for an explanation why tho chnrge made for direct currctib power supplied from the tramway station is 'higher than the ■ rate charged by tho Lighting Department for aHornating cur* rent used for power, I beg to submit the following statenieKt:—For the year ended March 31 last the Tramway .Department supplied 2,057,(14:1 '-units to power vscrs, anil received an average revenue of 2.22 d. per unit. The cost of supplying thin power included, iSn addition to generation and distribution expenses, capital chargos amounting to .CIiSOO in tho underground reticulation system specially laid for the purpose at a costt of over .£311,1)00, and also a proportion of the capital charges on the power house. "For the same period tho Lighting Department supplied 520,082 units for power purposes and received an average revenue ot 2.2tk1. pet unit for this supply. Tho revenue from this source is only 5 per cent, oil tho total revenue of Hie Lighting 'Department, and duo to the relatively higfi lighting rate this department obtained 'an average of 3,95 d. for the whole of the units sold. "The altiernating current power connections are taken from .the lighting distribution system, any!, consequently, their supply is not loaded with capital charges on a separate/ distribution system, as is the case the direct current supply." .
