RAILWAY PERMITS
A VEXATIOUS SYSTEM. The early abolition of the present vexatious permit .system as a means of regulating passenger traffic on the -railways- was asked for in the House of Representatives yesterday by Mr. Nash. He gave instances of one or two cases of egregious failures of tiie system, and he pointed -out also that people travelling iroin the South Island suffered by the system in Wellington because the office lor tiio dispensation of permits <lid not (•pen until 9 o'clock, which made it impossible for travellers from the ferry sieamei , to join certain trains on the day of y'ftsir arrival. Mr. Massey said that he had discussed this matter with tho General Manager of Railways. He had the best' of reasons for knowing from communications he had received-how very irritating this system Was to the general public, and ho had given instructions that if possible the permit system should bo discontinued this week.
