Cleland the Otago captain (who is retiring from match play after rendering his club, more, than thirty years of highly valued service) has also taken part in all seven mntches, his tally in which is five draws and two. losses. On one occasion he had the misfortune to lose his game through misreading a move of his opponent, the Dunedin scrutineer failing to detect the error. Clerical errors in , telegraphic matches have been more frequent of late, and the New Zealand Chess Association will probably be asked to consider the ndvisableness of dropping the "roll" notation, and substituting therefor either the Kieseritzky or the ordinary English notation.
