NOTES FROM VARIOUS CENTRES From Our Special Correspondents. WAIRARAPA Tho monthly meeting of the General Committee of tho Masterton A. and 1\ Association was hold on .Saturday, Air. \V. H. Buick presiding. A letter was received from the Education Hoard thanking tho association for a subsidy of ,£2O .to bo distributed among various schools in tho MiLsterton district. The Masterton Bailway Social Club wrote thanking tho members of tho iissociation for tho sum of 5.% given to tho railway social fund. In rctaonco to a request from the Poultry Society to incorporate a young bird exhibition in the next show, a committee was uppoiutod to interview the Poultry Society representative. Messrs. J. J. Dngg and Bland Kaynor were added to tho .Canvassing Committee. Tho offer of Mr. X. M.. B'aird for first, 6econd and third prizes lor flock Koinneys was accepted with thanks. Mr. D. Caselberg moved, and it was agreed, that next year sub-com-mittees bo appointed to revise the schedule. ' Tho following now members were elected: J. B. Mackenzie, J. Grcig, V. Billington, W. ,T. Mummer, fi. BridgeKater, Mrs. and E. Tathnm, F. Forner, C. Taylor, nnd C. N. Stilborn. At a meeting of tho Grounds Committeo of the Mastcrton A. and P. Association held on Saturday morning. Mr. E..Harper was elected chairman for tho ensuing your. It was decided that the supervision of work in connection with various parts of tho ground be delegated to the following: Extension of produce hall, Mr. ty. Harper; ram ring and pcu, Mr. \\'. D. AVat.soii; accommodation quarters, Mr. D. Smith/., , Tfio Finance Committee of tho Wnirarapn A. and P. Society met on Saturday aiid was presided, over by Mr, A. T. Spatn. The treasurer's report showea a debit balance of J317 its. 3d., for the month ending August 20, and an expenditure of £US 2s. i{\.
A' large number of people assembled at tho Presbyterian Church. Lansdowne, on Friday night to bid farewell to the ]{ev. T. and Mrs. Halliday, who leavo shortly.for Foxton. Eulogistic speeches were delivered by the following: Tho ITev. G-.-.T. Brown (Knox Church), Rev. J. Cocker (Methodist), Ensign Sawyer (Salvation Army), Jlr. F. T. Redman,, and Mr. J). A. Pickering. From tho congregation Mr. Halliday received x. silvor inkstand and a pair of gold sleevo link 3, and Mrs. Halliday was presented with a leather handbag on behalf of tho Sunday School scholars. During the evening musical items were rendered, following which supper was served by a committee of Indies.

The weekly meeting of the ClaimsBoard of the Wairarapa Patriotic Society was held yesterday, Mr. Hugh Morrison presiding. Four applications for loana aggregating JM-80 were granted.. An application from a- Taihape soldier for a loan of ,£l7O was referred to the Taihape Society, with a strong recommendation that it be. favourably considered. Six claims, for temporary relief were dealt with. ' '
'The accommodation of the Lausdownn Presbyterian Church was taxed to its utmost on.Sunday evening, when the Rev. Thomas HaUiduy preached his farewell sermon; -During the- course-, of his address the preacher mentioned that Lansdowne had been his first charge in New Zealand. He had completed five and a half years of work among them, and though/he. regretted leaving the district he,felt it his duty to, accept the'call to Foxton.
MNAWATU ' In the Bumiythorpe district during tho past three months nineteen farms havo changed hands, prices ranging i'P to ,£llO per aero. During tho pa6t week Mr. G. Hills and Mr. J. T. Koso have sold their farms on Roids Line at a very satisfactory figure. At the monthly meeting of the Board of Directors of the Y.W.C.A. Hostel at Palmerston. it was reported that there were 37 permanent boarders in the hostel and that 24 visitors had tan accommodated. During the past niontft applications for accommodation had to bo refused, and it was evident that extension would havo to be undertaken at an early date. At a meeting of the College Street School Committee a letter wis received from tho Education Board stating that tho Department was prepared to make a grant of .£9oo' towards oxtensiou of tho school: site, • provided .£7OO was raised locally. It was decided to ask the
Education Bo.wi to pay half the amount of purchase money over an] abovo tlio amount of tho Government grant, it being statcd'thnt the board hail previously agreed to assist in finding the money for tho new sito. It was also decided that tho Board of Education bo requested to pay a deposit ou the section under consideration. Tho Woodville branch of the Tanners' Union has decided to affiliate with Manawatu sub-provincial union. Mrs. Treincwnn, of Craw'e Road, Shannon, was thrown from her trap recently. Tho reins broke and tho horse bolted. Mrs. Tremowan was not very seriously injured. An accident happened to Mr. Mohi Ilokera at Otaki a few davs ago, when by some mishap ho fell on a fire and received very severe burns about tlie head. His face was badly injured, and practically all the hair bu'nud from his head. At a welcome home social at Tokomam held last week the presentation of n, medal was made to tho following returned soldiers: Messrs. 0. H. Smith, 11. J. Smith, J. R. Moodv, J. Martin, AV. E. Rowland, A. Jillott, T. Frame and J. Dalzeli. Twenty-three new members have been elected to tho Monawatu Philosophical Society. At a meeting of the society, to be held on September 2G. papers will bo contributed by Mr. H. Edwards on "Tuakerua Swamp," and by Mr. Grace, whoso subject will be "Are Other Worlds Than Ours Inhabited."
On Saturday at Palmerstcn a presentation was mado by the staff of the "Union Bank, to Mr. J. L. Barnicoat, who is retiring from tho managership of tho bank. The presentation took the'form of a silver-mounted walking stick suitably engraved. Mr. Barnicoat was also the recipient of a presentation from the parishioners of All Saints' Church. At tho monthly meeting of the Pohangina County Council further correspondence was received from the Public Works Department'regarding the Oroua River bridge at Parsons Ford. The Departs ment strongly recommended that in place of tho diversion favoured by settlers in tho locality, an altcrnt.tive roading schemo bo' undertaken. It was suggested that the council have the matter of tho construction of the road in question looked into with a view to arriving at the approximate cost. Referring to the scheme preferred by the settlers interested, .the Department points! out : that there would always remain the danger of the river getting in behind the protective works and cutting a new channel or <loing' other serious damage. The council decided to refer the suggestion of the Department to the sottloi-s interested. Tho road mentioned would divert traffic from the Parsons Ford bridge to the London Ford bridge. The Manawatu Golf Club's four-ball liogey competition .has been won by Colonel Whyte and Colonel Robin6on, who finished seven up. In the finals for the club .championship A. Seifert created a surprise by beating A. Barrnud one up. On account of tiio Wauganui tournament, competitions which were set down for next Saturday have been postponed.
