MINIATURE RIFLE ASSOCIATION

OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. The first open championship meeting for the Dominion was held under the auspices of the association at the Bucklo Street Hall on Saturday. Owing to Sir James Allen having to attend a special Cabinet meeting the president of thb association opened the proceedings by reading a letter from tho Defence Minister, who wished the association every success. ' ; Tho president called attention to the fact of its being the first meeting of its kind held in the Dominion, and extended a very cordial welcome • to visitors and members, competing. Ho thanked the Defence Department for tho use of the hall, and pointed out the objects of tho association as being to encourage rifle shooting generally, and in particular to assist in the training of Cadets.. Owing to tho groat number of entries received tho committee regretted that time did not permit of all tho events boing completed, so wore making tho best arrangementa possible for tho completion at an early uafo which will bo notified to tho delegates of all clubs. After the president's speech a start was mado with tho Invitation match, th« conditions being 10 shots with compulsory eights, and some line shooting'wai> recorded. Messrs. M'Nie and Millington rath the fine score of 99 out of 100, dividing tho first and second p/ize money. Alter tea a 6tart was made with' tho Wellington Match, seven shots with compulsory sighter, Somo magnificent shooting was witnessed by a largo audience, who followed the shooting with interest This match was won by M'Kenzie, of Featherstta, who registered the only possible of the day, with. Graham and Nix in close attendance equal for sccond place with the lino 6Coro of G9 each. When this match concluded it was quite apparent to all that tho President's Match could not bo finished, and I it was then decided that the Featherston team only should shoot that ovening and to 'hold this match as well as the Rapid Fire Match at an early date. In' this shoot Vincent has set the main with 148 out of a possible 150, a very fine shoot indeed. The trophy for the ladies' aggregate over the first two matches was competed for with keen Miss Millward proving the -winner with a fine total of IGI points, followed .cteely by Mrs. O'SuUivan and Muss Wakclin, who tied for second place. It will bo seeii on glancing through tho various scores that the ladies' shoots ing compared very -favourably with some of tho local crack shots.
