WAR WORK OF JOURNALISTS
At the complimentary dinner tenderec by local journalists to their comrades in the profession who had returned iron: active service, which took place on Sat urdav evening at Astor House, Willis Street, the chairman (Mr. C. Earle) read the following letter from Sir James Allen. Minister of Defence:— . Office of Minister of Defence, Wellington September 10, 1919. Dear Sir—l regret that heavy Ministerial work will prevent me from attending the gathering on Saturday night, but 1 take this opportunity of joining in the welcome to your colleagues who hav< returned after serving their country al the front. p i To'the call for sacrifice made on everj section of the community tJie journalistic profession responded in the way in which mv association with its representatives would lead me to expect. Journalists. both as soldiers and as journalists, rendered very valuable assistance to the Allied, cause, and it must be a source oi great 'gratification to you all_ that the local record of the profession in a time of national emergency is an honourable one. of which you can well feel proud. Please add my welcome to thoso, which your returned-soldior colleagues will receive. and my. hope that. the gathering will be in every way a sucecss.—Your6 faithfully, (Sgd.) J.
