LADIES CROQUET CLUE

AT NEWTOWN,' Mesdaraes Hendry and Rhodes-Williams waited on the Reserves Committee of the •City Council yesterday afternoon in connection with tho terms on which- the newly-formed .Ladies' Croquet Club is to be allowed to take possession of the croquet lawn, whioh has been laid 'down on tho Town Belt at the head of Mein, .Street by tho City Council at a cost,of' ,£l3O. It was reported by the deputation Hint the formal meeting for tho formation of tho club had been held, and though there had not been n large atleildnnee, they were pretty confident that they would be able to ■ get the thirty members,required. The committee.had j'solved that the club should pay J?ls a year rent, and pay for the upkeep oi the ground. Tho deputation asked that the rent, for the first year.atiall events, should be cGIO, and that - the ' council should attend to the upkeep of the ground. On being consulted, Mr. M'Kcnzie, the director, \of Eesorves, said that the upkeep would cost between Mt> and. .£2O per annum—estimating on one day's work per week for seven months of tho year. The chairman said dint the ground had cost a, good deal—levelling and preparing tho ground, cSSOO; pavilion, ,£100; sundries, .£3o—and the Indies must-see' that they secured more.members.
