-.:■■■■ ;■■:■ -■» ~/.., ■ . "A EEPEOACH TO THE CHUECH." fly TelecraDh—Preen ABiociatlon. Christchurch, September 10.i "I cons-'rler it as a reproach to the Church to ask Ministers to live on ,£2OO ner annum." This remark was made bv the Eev. Dr. Envin at a meeting < of the Christchurch ■ Presbytery today. Dr. Erwin was speaking to a mo'tion bv the Eev. J. Paterson that the interim Moderator .of ,the Malvern charge, which will be ■ rendered vacant soon, should be asked to see that the wlaiV offered for • the charge in future would be not less than .£250 per annum. Dr. Envin said it was just a question whether the Church was not the greatest sweating institution in Christendom. Indeed, if tho Church gave a little oyer a labourer's wage, with a houso_ "thrown in" to men who had to do six years' studv to qualify, was it not the greatest sweating institution? He considered that clerevmen should ho given a salnry sufficient to enable them to bring up their children decently and educate them as professional men's children ought to be. Mr. Paterson's motion was earned unanimously.
