RUGBY FOOTBALL

TARANAKI'S CHALLENGE FOR'THE SHIELD. Another big crowd is expected at the Athletic Park to-day, -when tho second Ranfurly match of the season takes place. Taranaki iyere the previous holders of the shield, and to-morrow's match with Wellington is invested with special interest. The visitors are reported to be strong in the forwards, and have two representatives (Masters and M'C'ook) in the North Island vanguard. Taranaki has a bigger percentage of players than any other province in the. New Zealand Army team in South Africa, and were they all available, Taranaki's chances of tilting tho shield would 'be the, brightest and best. In the absence of H. E. Nichoils behind tho scrum many Wellingtonians think the shield-holders could have been greatly strengthened by ; Roberts at half, Algar to partner J. Til- ' yard at five-eighth, and Chestermaii in at wing three-quarter. C. Tilyard at half should be able to do the needful if the ! Wellington hookers only get the ball. His Excellency the Governor-General, Ministers of the Crown, His Worship tho Mayor, and Generals Robin, Richardson, and M'Gavin have been invited to the match. Mr. E. Tregear has been chosen by Taranaki to control the game. The ciirtain-raisor. is Wnnganui Marisfc Old Boys (senior) v. Wellington Marist Old Boys (junior).
