The Department is calling foi the tenders in only two designs, which have been specially prepared for building in concrete, but builders may submit their own systems of building and their own plans and specifications for consideration. Tenders will be received up to September 30, and if thev prove satisfactory the Department will ask Cabinet to authorise the immediate commencement of the work of building. "It is quite well understood by tlio Deparfment," said Sir. Rowley yesterday. "that a much larger number of dwellings than 200 is required to meet the housing throughout New Zealand; but it remains to be seen whether tenders with the requisite labour and material caii bo obtained at onct' even for 200 houses. K they are obtained, it is understood that arrangements can readily be made for tho erection (>t more bouses."
