AUSTRALIAN AGENTSGENERAL
I : S SIR CHARLES LUCAS'S VIEWS. (Rec. September f>, 5.5 p.m.) London, September 4. Sir Charles Lucas, of the Colonial Office, Overseas Department', in an interview, said Hint while the. question of the abolition of the Australian Stale Agents-' General was a matter for Government policy, many persons' were ignorant of the multifarious duties performed by the. agents in financial matters, particularly in respect to the flotation and 'repayment of loans, and dealing with tenders for immense quantities of materials for railway? ami public works. Tho Agent(ie'neral required to liavo an intimate knowledge of his State, ond it would be unreasonable to expect a Federal officer to transact the business as satisfactorily. People also must remember that a federal official would be amenable only to tho Commonwealth Government.—Aus.,N.H. Cable Asa.
