— . HIS. MAJESTY'S REPRESENTATIVE ASSAULTED AT VAVAU.
By TeJecrapti.—Vrefs Aspociatir.n. Auckland; September 5. The "Star's" Vavau correspondent writes: "Cheat indignation prevails throughout the iVavau Group, owiug to the fast that His Majesty's representative was grossly assaulted by ono of the German residents 1 in Vavau. A petition containing all the Dames of British residents on that island has been forwarded to the High Commissioner for the Eastern Pacific, demanding the immediate deportation''of the offender, together with other German residents of that island. During tho war the Germans have been kept under restraint. Firearms have been taken. from their possession, and lliey have been confined to their homes during the night time. But with tho signing of' the Peace Treaty the arrogance that lias always characterised tho German has broker, out, and Vavau is at present in the throes of violent antiJjrithh demonstrations. On July 30 His .Majesty's representative, while inside a lcca' store, was confronted by one of the Germans, who, after hurling numerous choice epithets at his head, and ineluding Britons in general, concluded by catching hold of-him, learinsr his clothes, and generally roughly handling him. A Britisher rushed into the street, and summoned the local native police, but they -were powerless to help, and the mail was finally permitted to leave tho shop, not 'being taken into custody."
