OUR BEAUTY SPOTS
POLICY OF THE GOVERNMENT, The report of the Scenery Preservation Department, laid on the table of tlio Houso of Representatives yesterday, mates tho following statement.of policy:— "Although 6uch good results have, 'been achieved so far, much still-'remains to bo done. Here and there throughout the Dominion small scattered areas containing scenery of oulstanding beauty will from time to time be inspected witlr a view to their acquisition and reservation, and when blocks of virgin land are being opened for settlement—as, for instance, < in the Urewcra Country—certain picked beauty spots will be set aside under tho Act. In addition there are well-known resorts, such as the AVanganui River, Marlborough Sounds, and the Hot Lakes districts, where scenic reservation is not complete, ami further action is necessary to safeguard tlio unique attractions of these localities. . As opportunity offers these matters will be attended to, and every endeavour will bo made, compatible.'with tho funds at the disposal of the Government, to retain and preserve for nl! time the scenic attractions of New Zealand."
