SINN FEIN MURDERS
A "POLITICAL VERDICT." I A special correspondent of the "Glasgow Herald," who lata'.y visited Ireland to inquire into the activities of the Sinn Fciners writes: As an illustration of Sinn "Fein propaganda by violence let me mention the Knocldong affair, which sent a thrill of horror through Ireland during my visit, A Sinn Fein prisoner was being conveyed under polico escort froni; Tliurles to Tipperary. At Knoeklong station, near 1 Limerick Junction, a band of rutlians rushed along tlio corridor of the carriage, shouted ."Hands up!" and at the same timo fired a volfey of revolver shots upon thb escort. Two constables were so severely wounded that they died. Tho orisoner,. was rescued, and, along with hjis associates, jumped from tho train at the side opposite the landing platform. The country was scoured for days afterward?, lint.no trace of the gang could be found. Tho train was woll filled , and among the passengers were a numlier of soldier;. Not less- remarkable than the outrage wbb the attitude taken up by tho jury at the inquest into- tho circumstances in which the policemen were shot. To the formal verdict they added the following riders:— "A? it is painful l to all lovers of peace that incidents of tho kind should occur so often, wo believe thati tho English Government should at once erase arresting respectable persons, tjicreby causing bitter exosppration among the peonlc. AVe nl--n coll in the Government to out President Wilson's points of sMf-dctermina-tion into effect, and put self-govnrnment in "neration in Ireland at once." "That wo strongtv condomn the action of the Government in arresting men without ehargo, thereby exnnsing noliccinen to dange;-. We offer the rebtivns of tho decoasM our sincere sympathy." Tim? a political verdict follows political crime. Could anything demonstrate mora clearly tho wmper of Sinn Fein?
