GENERAL LABOURERS
PAYMENT FOR WET OR FINE WJJATHiiIt, Councillor C. H. Chapman mentioned at last evening's meeting of the City Council that the Mayor 'had made a statement to the offect that tho general labourers in the employ of tho City Council were, paid whether tho weather was wet or fine, and pointed out that such was not the case. Would the Mayor favour the idea ho had conveyed and pay the men for both wet and fine weather?
Tho Mayor said that he had made tho statement in all good faith, but. as soon as ho found out that it was npt actually the -case ho had made a statement revising his original statement. That was all ho wished to say—ho was not going to say who was at fault. Regarding the payment of .labourers for wet weather, a deputation, with Mr. M. J.j Reordon, had waited on tho Finance Committee on Monday, putting forward certain claims, but in that connection _thero wero many things to take into consideration. The conditions of one service might affect some or all other services. The council, however, stood for honest payment for services Tendered, He could speak for tho committee in saying that there would bo some improvement in tho condition of genoral labourers, and confessed that ho was absolutely staggered when informed that tho men were not paid for time lost through wet weather.
