Page, S.M., at tlio Mag- [ istrate's Court yesterday to, answer u ' clinrco of unlawfully absenting himself from tlio ship. Sub-luspector Emerson stated tlmt the defendant left tlio vessel at Wellington on Monday, and signed on the steamer Maori. Ho did one trip to Lvttelton, and on the vessel's arrival hack in Wellington he was arrested. The defendant admitted that he left the ship as he did not desire to remain on her any longer for the reason that he 1 objected to working alongside the coloured members of the crew. He had asked for his discharge. His Worship entered a conviction, and ordered defendant to ' forfeit two days' pay. Pines of £3, £2, and ss. respectively i were imnosed on William Brown on ' charges of committing an indeccnt net, using obsceno language and drunkenness. I A claim for the return of two books entitled "Midwifery" and "Diseases of i Women" was the nature of tho action • taken bv Dr. H. A. 11. Claridgo before Mr. W. G. Kiddell, S.M., against Dr. A. Parker. In evidence the plaintiff said that lie loaned tho books to Dr. Parker, and in aoite of repeated applications he was unable to Tegain possession, of them. Ho valued the books at ,£2 2s. each, but it was not ths money he required, but the hooks. The defendant did not appear, and was not represented by counsel. His Worship gave judgment for the Dlaintiff. and made an order for the return of the boolca before September 11, in default defendant to pay .£4 45., tho valtie of the books. Mr. N. A. J. Barker appeared for the plaintiff. A GROCER'S CLAIM. ■T. I!. Burley proceeded against David Morgan, claiming £o for articles of fuiniture alleged to have been sold to Morgan, and not paid for. The ealo took Dlaca in connection with an arrangement for the lease of certain premises. Tim defendant denied liability and coun-ter-claimed for t £ll Bs. for certain articles aileffed to have been removed and danmee done, to wall paper and fittings ih a house. ■J His Worship gave judgment for plaintiff on tho claim, but adjourned decision in resnect of the counter-claim till.Tuesdav next.
