At a'meeting ot the Mauawatu County Council a letter 'from the Eoxton Farmei'js' Union was read ■ thanking the council for the stand it had taken in regard to goat'a-i'uc in the Manawatu district in not declaring it noxious weed in this district until it was so declared at the sources. of supply, namely, tho upper reaches of tho Manawatu Hiver. The union also suggested that the council ask the Government to enforce the cutting of goats'-rue on all Government lands, particularly river-beds. It v;a3 felt useless to impose the cutting of goats'-rno on the lower reaches of tiie Manawntu until it was coped with at tho source. The weed was known to be growing up as far as Mangatainoka. and it was believed that it was fi.rst introduced by the Government, who planted it in tho silt flat somewhere above'the gorge to prevent the Scouring of the 'river at that point. At a meeting of tho committee of the Manawatu Racing Club officials for the. ensuing year were elected as follow:— Judge, Mr. J. B. L. Stanford; handicapper, Mr. J. , E. Henrys; starter, Mr. A. In coniiection with yesterday's ballot for tho Kniranga returned soldiers' settlement block, contrary to expectation.;, tho Department was not inundated with applicants. The block is all first-class land, situated on (he Ncwbury Line, mid comprises 391 acres, which has been cut into twelve sections ruuging from ill to 32 acres. It was expwtcd that there would be quite a rush for this settlement, as tlio properly is considered a most desirable one, '.but as a matter of fact the total number of applicants win' only IS, tho majority of whom had put in for every suction, The Oturora settlement is situated about eight miles from Levin and six miles from IWou. Tho propwly- wan purchased by the Government, from Mr. W. S. Carter, and has been cut inlo eeven sections, running fi'oiii SB to _ 181 acres. The land is' described as firstclass, but some of it is rather light and sandy.
