A sharp shock of earthquake was felt nt Palnic-raton at 10.10 a.m. on Sunday. Some little timo ago a line seam of lignite was discovered at Sanson close to Feilding, and arrangements were made for working it. At the same spot a good etam of fireclay lisjs now been located wliioh it is hoped will add to Feilding's industries, as it is reported to bo the best, in tho North Island.
. A motor-cycle, ridden by John M'Sweeney, of North Street, Palmerston North, was proceeding along Main Street on Sunday night, about half-uast ten o'clock, anil the intersection of West Street was struck by a motor-eir travelling in the same direction. Miss Lundy, of Foxton Line, was ridin? on the carrier of the motor-cycle, and the force of the impact was such that she was carried under tho car, her injuries consisting of a painful cut on one leg and minor injuries, besides a severe, shaking. Mr. M'Sweeney sustained minor injuries. Tho driver of tlio motor-car, whose name is not known, escaped without injury.
The death of Mr. Samuel Greer, which occurred on Saturday, removes another Manawatu pioneer settler. Born at Liverpool 71 years ago, Mr. GTeer came to New Zealand .with his*parents iv. 1851. lie married a daughter of the late Mr. George Mexted, of Tawa Flat, in 18SG, and came straight to Jlaiiawatu, where he took ,up fawning in the Fitzherbert district About twelve years ago air. Greer retired, and removed to Palmerston. During his residence in the district the decensed had taken an active part in local politics. For some .years he was a member of the old Fitzherbert lioad Board, and chairman of the Tiritea School Committee. He had also been president of the Manawatu Hacmg Club, the Palmerston North and Terrace End BowJdng ■ Clubs, Linton Rifle Club, and Manawatu Cricket Association. In his younger day Mr. Greer was a well-known rifle shot, and attended many of tho association meetings. He took part in tho Maori War, and was afterwards an enthusiastic volunteer. He was always a great supporter of cricket, and was populariiy known as the father of cricket in the Manawatu, He had been instrumental in getting Australian and English teams to visit Palmerston, and contributed liberally towards the exnenses of the teams' visits. Ho also acted as. sole selector for the Manawatu district for many years. He was a keen member of the American Order of Oddfellows, ond a charter member of the Orient Lodge. He was also a member of the Masonic TCil'winning lodge No. 47. Ho loaves, besides a widow, a family of cons and daughters, aJsol9 p-randehildren. One son (Stanley) wn.l killed at the war. The. court martial in the ease, of T?oydo'n Lee for havjne neglected to register was resumed yesterd.iy. when Lee gave evidence on his own behalf that he had enlisted for the Main Bodv : in Auckland in A.iigust or- September 1915. He was examined by Dr. Savage and declared medically unfit owing to an injury to his foot- caused by n. tree falling on it while W'-felling.
