BOTHA'S FUNERAL
MAGNIFICENT TRIBUTE BY THE PEOPLE SMUTS SUCCEEDS TO THE PREMIERSHIP Cape Town, August 30. General Botha's funeral was attended bv thousands of people from all parts of tho South African Union. Thousands of wreaths were sent. The King was represented by Captain Stanley, Imperial Secretary.
Mrs. Botha and other relatives were present, and the whole of tho Ministry marched in the cortego three miles to the cemetery. An impressivo lead was given by Gonerals van Deventer and Brits, mounted on huge chargers. The King has cabled an expression of profound regret at the death of General Botha. Tho Empire, ho says, mourns the loss of a chivalrous soldier and a high-minded statesman; and thß Government will miss his wise counsel and guidance. ■ , , „ A message from Mr. Lloyd George says:—"The Empiro mourns the loss of one of its greatest citizens."
