Mr. E. Page, S.M., presided at Die Magistrate's Court 011 Saturday, -Uul dealt with tlio police cases. For insobriety three first: otVcndcrs who failed to appear were lined 10s. each, the amount of their bail.

The accused said that lie could not get a bed, and felt justified in sleeping where ho could. Opawa, was charged with wilfully disobeying a lawful command of the chief officer Cecil Lamb; aDd therb was a second charge of assaulting Captain S. C. White-Parsons. It. was stated in evidence that t.bo accused came on board at about 2.30 p.m. m a drunken state. He was ordered by the chief officer to go forward, but ho refused to do so. The captain then came cr. 'he scene, and as the man's behaviour Vilis violent, the captain ordered the chief officer to go ashore and arrange for the arrest of the accused. TVhcn the chief officer left the accused used filthy lan?iui£o towards tlio captain and assaulted the latter. The accused becamo so violent that he was placed in irons and subseoileiiii.Y handed over to the police. Collins admitted disobeying the commands of the captain, hut denied disobeying the chief officer. He. was very drunlc at the time for he had had twelve pints of beer besides a ivhi. B ky or two. Thu ohiej officer said that' the accused was a good worker when sober. The captain said that ho did not wish to have the man bant on board. Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared for the prosecution. The Magistrate eonvietcd the accused on both charges, and fined him .in the aggregate with costs '18s., with i.he alternative of nine days' imprisonment,
