. In reply to a request tho Mannwatu Busby Union has forwarded -the name of Carroll (forward) for possible inclusion in the Now Zealand representative team. I Owing to the impossibility of travelling i by rail, the Manawatu Rugby Union lias ! been compelled to decline the invitation , to' play Wellington on September 13. i Owing to Awahnri and tho High School I juniors being unable to find teams tho ! Rngby Union has decided to declare the I third-grade competition closed, the win- , nere being the Feilding District High i School team. I Mr. L. B. Grunt, instructor for the ! Agricultural Department, Whangarei, I has been transferred to Palmeraton North, and takes up his duties shortly. The Feilding Borough Council has decided to raise a loan of ,£35,000, to be allocated as follows:—,£ 10,000, increasing the water supply; JH20,000, street improvements; and J!M00, war memorial. Early on Friday morning n big block of buildings, occupied by Mr. J. Porter a" a general store at Apiti, was completely destroyed by fire, only tho books being saved. Mr. Porter was a very heavy loser, as he was carrying a large stock at the time of the outbreak. The Public Library, in conjunction with the store I was also destroyed, and 1200 books wore J lost. Tho building was the most conj spicuous one in Apiti, covering a quarter I of an acre.
