H.M.S. NEW ZEALAND V. WELLINGTON j ANOTHER VICTORY FOR THE • VISITORS '. Yesterday the team from H.M.S. Now r Zf-aland mot another team of Welling- ; ton TC-prcsentaticL's at Karori Park, and " t after a brilliant exhibition of hockey the Visitors wero successful in winning [ bv tliroe jjoals to two. The sailors pluy- . eri v'itb the dash and brilliancy displny- [ ed in the first game, and their stick- [ work was a treat to witness. The local i team, while perhaps not considered by > local enthusiasts to bo as strong as Mon- '. day's team, surprised their most ardent uriiiiircrs, and hud it anything a little ' the l>est of tuo game. The gonlkceping of Midshipman CassMls was of the highest older, and to him the sailors were indebted for their victory. On the local 6ids tho outstanding player was undoubtedly the right full-back, Sherwood, whose play was the admiration of both \ locals and visitors. The teams were:—New Zealand: Goal, \ Midshipman Cassells; full-backs, Lieut.- ' Commander •Spooncr and Midshipman I[uj.'j;nr(l; halves, Midshipman Eykyn, ' liii'rtenant Ciiinliffe and Midshipman ■ Buriouiihs; forwards, Lieutenants Russell, Al'Masters, and Chevnllier, Sub--1 Lieuli-najit Caddell nrd Captain BrookShortt. Goal, Moore; full- ' bocks, Sherwood and Selijr; halves, Tandy, Andrews, Hofh'ens; forwards, Batemnn, Johns, Devenport, Webley, mid I Smith. 1 The referees wero Messrs. A. C. Pras--1 noil and A. W. Manning. ' From the "bully" play was carried to 1 tho Wellington twenty-five, and after a 1 scramble Wellington conceded a corner, ■ which was .well cleared, and from tho ' resultant rush Wellington almost opened 1 tboii account iby the aid of Dcvenport, ■ whose shot was turned aside l>y the Now • Zoaland back, Spooner. From the twentyfive "biflly" the locals again had New Zealand on the. defence, but the sailors' goalkeeper was equal - to the occasion. At ' this time the New Zealand forwards, by :' combination, twice looked like scoring, ; but on ouch occasion a twenty-five re- ) suited. After several minutes of up-nnd-i down play, dnring which the backs of • both teams displayed fiou'.o spirited <le- ■ feusivc play, the locals again had a ■ chance of ecorinpj, but the ball was skied ! owr tho net. From this on the New , Zealand men asserted themselves, and [ from a passing rush Mifnstor found tho . net. Spurred up by this, tho..Wellingi ton team made great efforts to equalise, i but collld not penetrate tho visitors' defence, and the spell ended—New Zealnnd, '. 1; Wellington, (I. On resuming Wellington immediately attacked, and Devenport had a shot ' which was well stopped by the goal- , keeper. The gome at this stage was very fast, the ball travelling up and down the field, but tho dofencc of both sets of backs was sound. Eventually Wellington woro given an opportunity and l( Smith made no mistake with the shot, ; which gave tho visitors' (joal-kceper no 1 chance. New Zealand, 1; Wellington, 1. This reversn livened Hie visitors up 7 and 1 from a rush M'Wastor'miain found tho net, making the scores: Now Zealand, 2; Wellington, I. The visiting forwards were now playing a fine (tame, and only the sterling play of Sherwood prevented them from adding to their total. From a clearance by Sherwood the Wellington J team again invaded their opponents' cirnle, and Bateman had a shot which ; went wide. Wellington continued to press, but were unable to score, nnd ; once again New Zealand sot busy, and ' by combined plav carried the ball down- ' field and 'Chevnllier finished off by finding the net. New Zealand 3; Wellinc- ; ton, 1. From this out Wellington made ' great efforts to score, and were only pre- ' vo.nted by the fine slopping of the" Now Zealand goal-keoner, Cassoll.?, who re- ' Doatcdly saved. Following a fine run by Sherwood, Webley hud ii shot, but was ' offside, and Now Zealand cleared. The locals were not to be denied, and after a hot spell of attacking Devenport maii- ; aged to beat the New Zealand goalkeener. making the total New Zealand 3, Wellington 2. From this on both sides • ivere trying hard to add to their scoro, but the defence was solid, nnd the whistle blew with the score New Zealand 3, Wellington 2. After the game the visitors wore entertained at afternoon tea by tho local j team, when Mr. Manning, in a few wellj chosen words, _ expressed to the visitors i I the local association's appreciation of the i New Zealand team's visit. Lieutenant . ' Cmiliffe. on behalf of the visitors, suirj ably replied, and conurntnlnted the local I players on their sporting pjay, and oxpressed a wish for another game on their . return to Wellington;
