He was a student at Viotoria College,.and immediately enlisted on the outbreak of war. Returning from service at Samoa, ho went into camp at Trentham, andi lottas a sergeant with the Thirteen Reinforcements. Ho took part in the Sornnie offensive, and was slightly wounded. On recovering, he was sent to Palestine, where he joined the New Zealand Mounted Brigade, and was promoted lieutenant. He intends to take an extra course of law at New College, Oxford, m terms of the Rhodes Scholarship. Mr. R. C. O'Connor, who hns resigned from tlio position of supervisor of tlio National 'Provident- Fund at Auckland to take up the position of registrar of births, deaths, and marriaws and registrar of electors, was 011 Thursday preedited by the Superintendent (Mr. If. E. Hayes), 011 behalf of the staff, with a silverplated epergne. In making the presentation- Mr. Hayes referred to the fa;t that the, recipient had been connected with the National Provident Fund almost eince its establishment, ami had assisted in much of the initial work of launching the scheme. The lecturing and outsido experience of Mr. O'Connor had been of the greatest assistance, and the Superintendent very much regretted that his services were to be 110 longer available to tlio Department. Mr. O'Connor, in reply, referred to the- interesting nature of the early work of the fund, the success_ of which was now assured. On behalf of liiins°lf and wife he thanked his late fellow officers for their good wishes and i-ouvenir.
Captain W. Jack, who for the past 25 years has been connected' with Messrs. Ki'mpthorne, Proper, nnd Co., Ltd., and who for many years has been manager of the Wellington branch of that firm, has been offered nnd lias accepted the position of assistant general manager of the New Zealand Farmers' Co.op. Distributing Co., Ltd., Wellington, which position he will assume 011 his rotiu'ii from active service in November next. Captain Jack enlisted in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force as a private in the Twonty-fourth Reinforcements, but oi the eve of the draft's departure from England for the front he was ordered to report at headquurters for special duties. Subsequently he was transferred to the New Zealnnd Medical Headquarters, and later was appointed quartermaster, an important post' dealing with the supplies for the New Zealand Forces. Captain Jack is very well known in compieicial circles in "Wellington, and is also a prominent member of the New Zealand Institute of Accountants.
